Six businesses have increased their profit margin as a result of a waste minimisation initiative carried out over the past 3 years in the Orkney Islands. Business WINS (Waste Minimisation in the North of Scotland) was set up to provide targeted support to a group of companies from a range of industries and to identify opportunities that would deliver both financial and environmental benefits to them.To celebrate the success of the project, businesses in the Orkney Islands are invited to attend a free seminar at which a number of the successful firms involved in the project will share best practice advice on how changing the way they deal with waste increased their bottom line.
Chris Mathews, SEPA's Pentland Unit Manager, is delighted with the results:
"With this project every business in the Islands wins. All businesses, large and small, need to reduce their waste - what Business WINS has illustrated is that they can also reduce costs, increase their profit margins and use their resources more efficiently. It is good for their commercial future and for the environment so SEPA is keen to help them succeed".
Richard Holmes, local Business Advisor for the Energy Saving Trust, added "Recent increases in energy prices and waste disposal costs have highlighted the need for businesses to manage their resources effectively. The Business WINS project has demonstrated that local businesses can make significant ongoing savings, and this event will be of benefit to all businesses interested in making savings of their own".
The free event with buffet lunch takes place at the Ayre Hotel in Kirkwall between 10.30am and 2pm on Wednesday 30 November. It should provide an excellent opportunity for interested local companies to meet the project partners, participating businesses and to find out more about the practical business benefits of effective waste minimisation.
